Food Group — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-07-14
Food Group is built and operated by Maximilien Bode ("we", "us") in Sydney,
Australia. This policy explains what data the app handles and your rights over it.
TL;DR. Food Group runs entirely on your iPhone. We do not collect, send, or
store your personal data anywhere we can see it. What you enter — what you eat, your
weight, your goals — stays on your iPhone, syncs only to your own private iCloud
(if your phone is signed in), and never reaches us or any third party unless you
explicitly export or share it.
What data the app processes
When you use Food Group, the app processes:
- Your body dimensions: height, sex, birth date, activity level
- Your goals: target weight, weekly pace, daily macro and micronutrient targets
- Your food logs: which foods you ate, when, and how much
- Your custom foods, scanned barcodes, and recipes
- Your water, alcohol, caffeine and supplement logs (all optional trackers)
- Your weight entries over time
- Your app preferences: theme, reminder times
All of this is stored locally in the app's private sandbox on your iPhone using Apple's
SwiftData framework. No third party (including us) can access it.
What we do NOT do
- We do not collect or transmit any usage analytics
- We do not use third-party tracking, advertising, or marketing tools
- We do not share your data with any external service
- We do not require you to create an account or log in
- We do not transmit your scanned barcodes to a community database
Network use
Food Group works offline. The only data that leaves your device is anonymous and contains
nothing personal:
- Open Food Facts lookups: when you scan a barcode or search packaged
products, the app sends the barcode number or search text to the Open Food Facts
database to fetch nutrition info. No personal data is sent.
- App announcements: on launch the app fetches a small public file of
announcements (such as beta or release notices). This is an anonymous request with no
identifiers attached.
- Recipe import: if you paste a web address to import a recipe, the app
fetches that page you chose. Nothing about you is attached to the request.
Apple Health
With your permission, Food Group can read energy and step data from Apple's Health app to
estimate your daily energy expenditure, and can write back what you log — food energy and
nutrients, water, and supplement doses — so your Health records stay complete. Each
direction needs its own permission, everything stays within Apple's Health framework on
your device, and you can revoke access at any time in the Health app.
iCloud sync & backups
- iCloud sync: if your iPhone is signed in to iCloud, your Food Group
data syncs to your own private iCloud database (Apple CloudKit) so it survives
a lost or new phone. It is encrypted in transit and at rest, lives entirely inside your
Apple ID, and is not visible to us or anyone else. Not signed in to iCloud? The app
simply works on-device. Settings → Privacy & data shows the current sync status.
- Automatic backups: the app also saves a weekly backup file on your
device (visible in the Files app under Food Group). It never leaves your phone unless
you share it yourself.
In-app purchases
Food Group offers optional paid features via Apple's In-App Purchase system. Apple handles
payment, billing, and any associated personal data per
Apple's Privacy Policy. We do not receive
your payment details.
Your rights
You can:
- Export your data: Settings → Backup & data → "Export backup"
produces a JSON file you can save or share anywhere.
- Restore your data: Settings → Backup & data → "Restore from
backup".
- Delete your data: Settings → Backup & data → "Delete my data +
account" removes every record from your device.
Uninstalling the app also removes all data.
Children
Food Group is rated 4+ but is designed for adults tracking their own nutrition. We do not
knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.
